About

BIO

Gabriele Peters is a multidisciplinary artist based in the upper Danube valley, Germany, specialized in photography and digital art. Peters began her artistic journey in analog black and white fineart photography, where she captured the interplay between natural and artificial structures, focusing on aesthetics and strict composition. Over time, she evolved her techniques by incorporating digital methods, leading to the development of a unique hybrid analog-digital process. Peters is best known for her innovative approach of extreme enlargements of digitized film negatives, resulting in images that reveal previously invisible details. Her works often feature estrangement effects, such as coarse grain, blur, and subtle monochrome colorization, evoking a dream-like or mystical atmosphere.

Peters’s work is rooted in a profound exploration of human perception and its relationship to reality, a theme that has informed her artistic process since the outset of her career. Her early series, including her debut solo exhibition „Streifzüge,“ reflect her fascination with Gestalt psychology and the science of visual perception, with compositions that challenge viewers to question the limits of their sensory experience. As her focus shifted toward the nature of consciousness, Peters began to delve into themes of alienation and estrangement, which are central to her series „Dark Days.“ This body of work captures the isolation of individuals in modern urban spaces, often depicting solitary figures navigating dark, inhospitable cityscapes. Influenced by filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky’s art theories, Peters, by giving an account of a hopeless world, aims at arousing the notion of the opposite ideal.

Gabriele Peters has exhibited her work at multiple venues, including the Museum Bochum in Germany, the „Slow Art“ Gallery at SIGGRAPH in Los Angeles, and galerie#23 in Velbert, Germany. She has also contributed to the art community through roles such as a jury member for SIGGRAPH’s International SpaceTime Competition and as portfolio reviewer at the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles, France. Peters’s work continues to resonate internationally, exemplifying a rigorous, thought-provoking approach that bridges science and art.
